What #ThanksMichelleObama Can Teach Us About Obesity

What if I told you that fat people are actually starving to death? That the obesity epidemic is actually a mind-boggling symptom of mass-starvation, rather than gluttony? Read on copper-top, if you want to have your mind blown about what is really happening in this country when it comes to our health and what we eat.

The #ThanksMichelleObama campaign by teens on social media is quite revealing as to the state of health and nutrition in this country, but in ways that may not be quite so obvious at first glance.

If you puke, save it,
someone else will have it
The campaign has students posting pictures of all sorts of disgusting concoctions and meager servings not even fit for a snack, much less a meal. School lunches have never been especially popular, standing alongside hospital food, non-premium airline meals, and so forth. But taking a look at some of these pictures, it seems like even county jail inmates are fed better than students. I feel lucky now, for the slop we were fed at school when I was a kid.

Click here for a sampling from BuzzFeed.

Should these hot messes really be blamed on Michelle Obama though? Now granted, it was her initiatives for policy change and regulations on school lunches that cut down your portion of processed meat-paste nuggets from six to three, but we have to take a step back for a moment and take a look at the bigger picture here in what she was hoping to achieve.

The USDA guidelines, implemented over the last few years, include limits on calories, fat, sugar, and sodium for all food and drinks sold during the school day for 100,000 schools across the country.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea at all actually. The obesity epidemic is now costing the world over $2 trillion annually, not to mention other health concerns from poor nutrition and eating habits, or the countless lives that are being lost. So how do we make sure that students (and people in general even) are eating better to cut down their risk of obesity and illness? Cutting out the "bad" stuff sounds like a good start. Of course there is even debate as to what is actually bad for you. Some say there is really nothing wrong with salt, sugar and fats, but we can save that debate for later.

Where's the beef?
If we are cutting out a portion of our diet, it has to be replaced with something else, or we are running the risk of actual starvation. And that certainly is not a healthy alternative. So, new school food rules set by Congress also require more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in school cafeterias. Then again, fruits are actually very high in sugars that they are trying to cut out for one thing, and these "good" foods wind up being as debatable as the "bad" foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains along with lean meats and healthy proteins are also expensive, but more on that in a moment.

When you look at these trays, it seems pretty clear that these students have been put on what is basically a starvation diet. While a mystery meat nugget on a bun and some applesauce might meet daily guidelines for fat, calorie and salt intake, while providing a balance of meat, grain and fruit, that tray is clearly not a proper meal. Especially for growing kids. That is not going to be enough to sustain you through that mile run in gym class and four more periods of what should be intense brain activity. It's little wonder why kids aren't focused, and don't have the energy to get out of their own way. The lack of energy, of course, will only wind up setting the stage for obesity all over again too.

Despite the First Lady's best intentions, those lunch trays are clearly not a path to better health for America's youth, or a lesson in healthy eating for the rest of us to follow. While that tray may meet "healthy" guidelines set by the FDA, it is missing one very critical component. Nutrition. The actual reason we eat in the first place. Now that really comes to the crux of the whole obesity issue, nutrition, or a lack thereof.

That chicken patty and applesauce tray does not provide real nutrition. Hyper-processed breaded meat paste and flour may fill your stomach for the moment, but it won't sustain you. The apple-flavored corn syrup mush is loaded with calories, but again, has no real vitamins, minerals, or proteins. It just looks healthy because it tells your brain "apple." So despite the fact that you got recommended levels of meat, grain fruit and calories, you still didn't get what you actually needed, nutrition. Now you have two choices. Starvation or obesity. That is basically what the Michelle Obama initiative has brought to light, looking at these trays. You can go hungry, or you can steal that patty bun from the kid sitting next to you violating the FDA "healthy" guidelines. You can starve, or you can over-eat and get fat.

Even with a second sandwich, that is probably not enough real nutrition for a person. So now they have over-eaten and "feel" full, but will still wind up foggy-headed and lethargic from lack of nutrition. Rinse and repeat, and there you have it folks. Fat people who are starving to death. You could eat all the Crisco-covered cardboard and boot leather in the world, but that won't keep you from starving to death. While we blame obesity for the gambit of health problems and diseases, we overlook the fact that being fat is not really a cause at all, but rather an effect of poor nutrition.

So what should we actually see on that Obama-lunch tray? Well, by cutting out that corn-syrup re-branded as applesauce, that would cut out a lot of calories right off the bat, which could be used by more nutrient dense foods. Home-made applesauce would be a much better choice, or perhaps even some sauteed apple slices with a few raisins and a little bit of unrefined brown sugar. Fewer calories, more nutrition. But we don't really have to put a dessert on a lunch tray anyway, and try to call it "healthy fruit." A small, fresh salad or vegetable might be a better option at lunch time.

How about that main entree? Instead of a hyper-processed breaded meat-paste puck on a hyper-refined white flour bun which offer essentially zero nutrition, an actual chicken sandwich on a whole grain bun would be a far better option. Free-range organic chicken having the most nutrients of course. (And less chance of chemical poisoning than the ammonia-soaked meat from and tortured, electrocuted birds.) A little bit of lettuce and a slice of tomato on there would be a tasty, healthy addition too. Since we have saved calories now by replacing overly refined and processed products, we can either serve a larger portion, or perhaps a second side dish such as a handful of mixed nuts, some yogurt perhaps with a bit of fruit, something actually healthy and nutrient rich while being much more filling as well.

So we see here that it's not really about cutting out fats or sugars, it is about choosing more nutrient-dense foods instead. Our bodies need fats, sugar, and salt just as much as vitamins minerals and protein. Cutting out certain components and simply feeding kids less is not a solution. It is starvation. Instead of taking things away, we need to add more nutrient-dense foods to the lunch menu.

This presents another problem though. School lunch programs run on a strict budget and have to put out whatever they can with the budget they have, and now too within the constraints of these FDA guidelines. So in Michelle Obama's attack on obesity, and within those budget constraints, this is the best that the schools could come up with. A starvation diet, as we can plainly see. Schools simply cannot afford to put out free-range grilled chicken sandwiches with a fresh garden salad and sauteed apples. They can't afford to serve a nice piece of balsamic-glazed salmon with some wild rice and roasted brussels sprouts salad. Or even if the schools could afford it, a lot of students would not be able to afford to pay what they would have to charge. Not in public schools anyway.

Now we see too, why not just young people are increasingly being swallowed up by this obesity epidemic, but the poor as well. What we are seeing here dispels the ignorant myth of poor people being gluttons, who "should stop eating so much if they are so poor." People living in poverty are living on a steady diet of nutritionally void foods like ramen, dollar store packs of hot dogs, and 3-liter bottles of generic soda-pop. This is why they are fat and have heart-disease, not because they are gorging themselves on Lindor truffles foie-gras.

And again, all of this exposes the fact that obesity is really masking a horrible truth about the world today. We are, quite literally, starving to death. Obesity is just a mask for mass starvation, on a core nutritional level. We just don't think of it this way. We don't see it, because of the incongruous nature of what we think about starvation historically, compared with a fat person in front of us on line at the supermarket. We imagine starving people to be war prisoners in death camps, or the bony little beggar children on the streets of India. There is one constant though, the poor and the voiceless are always first in line to starve. We see that here too with the obesity epidemic. The poor are the most likely to fall prey to this insidious and historically unprecedented cycle of nutritional starvation. while also taking the blame at the same time.

Brown Shooting a Psyop?

It's a funny thing about people who are being brainwashed. They don't know it, and will therefore argue to the death with you that it never happened. Now if you ask someone if they think the media brainwashes Americans, almost anyone would answer yes, absolutely. Yet when you show someone an example of it happening, a psyop, they will tell you that you are nuts. Let's have a look at this case.

It now looks like the Michael Brown shooting has turned out to be another psysop perpetrated by the mainstream media, for the purposes of social conditioning.

The police are out of control in this country, I will not argue that. There are hundreds of cases I can think of off the top of my head that show that. Yet none of those cases sparked the outrage we have seen in the wake of the shooting death of Michael Brown.

For the past several days the dead man has been portrayed in the media in the most positive light, with pictures of him holding babies and so forth. leading most folks to conclude that this might very well have been an outright street execution of an innocent citizen at the hands of a thug cop. Sadly enough, this is quite possible in our so-called land of the free.

But something about this case didn't quite set right with me from the start. The rush to judgement before any of the facts were in for one thing. Just because the police shoot someone, does not necessarily mean that a shooting is not justified. Even in a city or police department where abuses of power have been reported in the past. Then I observed how the case took off like wildfire in the media.

Today, the case has suddenly taken a 180-degree turn. Instead of a picture of a young man holding a baby or looking like your average college student, a photo emerged today of him pointing a pistol at a camera with a wad of cash stuffed in his mouth. Straight thug mode. Of course, one picture doesn't really prove or disprove anything. We all probably have a few stupid pictures out there that wouldn't make us look very good if it happened to wind up splashed by the media spotlight. Just the same though, it really gave me pause today when I saw it, and hooked into that uneasy feeling I had been having about the case from the start.

The real bombshell now though, is the latest report indicating that Brown may have been the perpetrator of a strong-arm robbery which the officer had been responding to. This seriously damages the theory that Brown was just some innocent person caught up in senseless violence by police.

But how does this make it a psyop you ask? Well, look at the net result here.

The media chose to run with the ball so to speak, and hype up this story to national, even international levels. This created a whirlwind of emotions and opinions by Americans. Thousands of people as late as yesterday turned out to clog city streets across the nation to protest the shooting. But today, the story essentially got its legs cut off by the revelation that the supposed victim, was probably a criminal and that the shooting might very well have been justified after all. The net result, is two-fold.

First, there will be the "I told you so" crowd who will use this case as an example from now on, anytime someone points out legitimate instances of abusive authority. What was, for a few days, a very bad PR debacle for the police has suddenly given them a teflon coating for future incidents. From now on whenever someone questions a police shooting, or questions the over-reaching arm of the police-state, there will be those who will simply write it off and say, "yeah, just like the Michael Brown case" and roll their eyes. The case has now quickly undermined the work of genuine activists who have been working for years to bring to light the legitimate concern of frequent abuses of authority by police.

Second, this case will create even further racial division in our country. Blacks will blame whites for not standing by a victim of police brutality, whites will blame blacks of ignorantly supporting thuggishness, and everyone will accuse everyone of being racist. It will wind up just like the Trayvon Martin case, or the OJ case, all over again. The old divide and conquer works every time. And let me just say this on that topic. The powers-that-be need us to stay focused on the racial divide. They don't want us to see that the real problem is an economic one, not a racial one. The elites don't give a crap about anyone that is not in their little club, and they have an army of cops out there to protect their interests, not yours. Those elites can't have blacks and whites coming together in one unified voice, to take back the American dream from the death grip of vampire banking and corporatism.

Now I will probably be accused of being just another woo-woo conspiracy theorist here, saying that this was a psyop. No, I don't think that some secret-agent spook went out there and orchestrated a street shooting. But I do believe that the media has been manipulated in such a way so as to deliberately undermine those who would dare to question authority while sowing even more racial hatred in this country. And who will benefit from that? Not Brown's family, not the people of that city. The powers-that-be are the only winners here.

Two Cops Brawl During Traffic Stop

And this is why there are so few good cops out there. Because the crooked ones rule the roost.

On the one hand, the uniformed officer thought he "was about to shoot someone" as he put it, over a traffic violation. Had this been a civilian, that very well might have been the way it turned out. Almost certainly, the alleged speeder would have been pummeled into submission, then slapped with a whole slew of felonies and other charges.

On the other hand though, an officer has every right to protect himself. So when the driver slammed the car door into his legs and jumped out, the uniformed officer was suddenly caught in a situation that was rapidly escalating out of his control. This is how cops get killed, by losing control of a situation. A police Lieutenant should know that better than just about anyone. Clearly, the internal affairs investigator was in the wrong here.

Nevertheless, no charges were filed against the detective. Not even the speeding ticket, after allegedly almost hitting a pedestrian at high speed. Again, if he had been a civilian, he would have been behind bars. There is no doubt of that whatsoever.

And the officer who really was just doing his job? Relieved of duty.

That's some... oh what's the French word for that? Oh yeah, bullshit!

Pre-Crime 'Minority Report' Computer Program Goes Live In Chicago

University professors have teamed up with the Chicago police department to develop a new technology which will allegedly predict violent criminal behavior. Using a computerized algorithm, Chicago has now generated a "Heat List" which indexes approximately 400 individuals they see as likely to commit violent crimes in the future. And some of the people on the list are not criminals at all.

So much for the tenet of "Innocent until Proven Guilty" or even the oft repeated police-apologist sentiment, "If you don't do anything wrong, have nothing to worry about."

For 22-year old Robert McDaniel, there certainly was something to worry about, when a police commander showed up at his house simply to issue a threat that he was being watched by police. McDaniel's grew up in a gritty neighborhood, but was guilty of no crime, and had no recent interactions with police of any kind. Yet there with this official authority standing there on his porch, issuing a stern warning that since he was being watched, there would be severe consequences if he committed a crime.

Stalking, verbal threats, is this what our modern police forces have been reduced to? Forget about the very tenets of due process for a moment, and consider that the actions of the police themselves border on criminality, in this instance, and all too often actually cross the line in countless others.

You certainly don't want the police showing up at your door for no reason or otherwise to specifically threaten you, especially when you consider cases like this one, where a woman called police for help after she was assaulted and wound up suffering this terrible ordeal.

Hope Steffey case

What good could possibly come from a police officer initiating a deliberately threatening confrontation with a citizen in their own home who as committed no crime?

"If you end up on that list, there’s a reason you’re there." -program commander in the Chicago Police Department

Perhaps, but that reason has nothing to do with being guilty of a crime. Where does this slippery slope end? DNA blood-draw checkpoints on every roadway? Cameras in your bedroom to ensure you aren't having deviant sex? Sound far-fetched? If you had told me, in the year 2000, the the government would be strip-searching children at airports I would have said you were nuts.

Custom Notifications in Chicago - Pilot Program
D13-09

I. Purpose

This directive announces the Chicago Police Department's pilot program for custom notification under the Violence Reduction Initiative in partnership with John Jay College of Criminal Justice Community Team, which will serve as outreach partners within the social service and community partners assembly.

II. Scope

The pilot program is effective 07 July 2013 and will continue until further notice in the 015 District.

III. General Information

A. While the Violence Reduction Strategy (VRS) is predicated upon group accountability, individuals within certain groups are identified as having the increased likelihood of victimization or engagement in criminal activity. The custom notification will identify those at-risk individuals and reach out to advise them of the risks and consequences of their actions should they engage in criminal conduct. The goal is to ensure the individual is not only informed of the law enforcement consequences for deciding to engage or continue in gun violence, but also of the devastating impact of gun violence within their community. Opportunities for seeking assistance will also be provided during the custom notification. However, it is ultimately the decision of the individual to choose not to engage in criminal activity.

B. For the identified individuals, custom notifications serve as notice that law enforcement action will not be random, but rather targeted and specific to the individual, and the failure to follow the clear and consistent message to cease participating in gun violence will have specific and cognizable penalties, as contained within the custom notification.

IV. Definitions

A. "Custom Notification" is a process that identifies potential criminal actors and victims associated with the continuum of violence. Once identified, the individual is notified of the consequences that will result should violent activity continue. The Custom Notification is predicated upon national research that concluded certain actions and associations within an individual’s environment are a precursor to certain outcomes should the individual decide to or continue to engage in criminal behavior. The Custom Notification will include a description of both federal and state sentencing options where applicable, as well as identification of the potential for seized assets and other consequences as appropriate.

1. Initial custom notifications may be predicated upon the Heat List generated by the Crime Prevention and Information Center (CPIC).

2. Ongoing custom notifications may be linked to public violence incidents (hot spots) or associated with call-ins as necessary and as approved by the district commander.

B. The "Heat List" is a rank-order list of potential victims and subjects with the greatest propensity for violence. The list is generated based on empirical data compared with known associates of the identified person.

C. "Influentials" are those individual seen as having importance or the ability to influence an individual’s actions. These can be both positive and negative influences.

D. The Custom Notification Letter will be used to inform individuals of the arrest, prosecution, and sentencing consequences they may face if they choose to or continue to engage in public violence. The letter will be specific to the identified individual and incorporate those factors known about the individual inclusive of prior arrests, impact of known associates, and potential sentencing outcomes for future criminal acts.

1. The Bureau of Organizational Development will work with the Office of Legal Affairs to develop a letter template for the Custom Notification.

2. The Office of Legal Affairs will provide review and approval of the Custom Notification Letter prior to distribution. The purpose is to confirm the range of outcomes identified as it applies to potential prosecution and sentencing outcomes.

3. The letters will be signed by the district commanders.

V. Procedures

A. District intelligence officers will:

1. continually review and update information relative to individuals linked to gun violence. These reviews will include, but are not limited to:

a. review of the Heat List for the district including the identification of those individuals who live within district.

b. CPIC information relative to criminal activity and conflicts within the district.

c. the District Gang Audit and other database information.

d. intelligence information relayed from district officers, area-assigned officers, and officers assigned to the Bureau of Organized Crime and Bureau of Detectives.

e. review of those individuals who have attended previous call-ins within the district.

2. identify those individuals eligible for custom notifications. Factors for eligibility include, but are not limited to:

a. placement on the Heat List;

b. victim of a shooting incident, where prosecution has been declined for lack of cooperation;

c. identification as a repeat offender for public violence crimes; and

d. other factors as developed and linked to public violence within the district.

3. when an individual is identified and:

a. residency is established, inform the district commander who will ensure the Custom Notification procedure is initiated.

b. residency cannot be verified, forward such information to CPIC and record the information in the district Heat List database pending subsequent confirmation of a new address. Residency will be verified and notification will occur at a future date.

B. The Custom Notification will be conducted under the direction of the district commander.

1. Those present for notifications may vary, based upon identified criminal factors, identified influentials, and other factors as identified in the review process.

2. A CPD officer will always be present for a custom notification.

C. The Custom Notification Team will:

1. generally conduct the notification at the identified individual's residence;

2. explain the Custom Notification program and the contents of the Custom Notification Letter;

3. deliver the letter to the identified individual.

NOTE:
When an identified individual is not present at the time of the custom notification, or refuses to participate, the Custom Notification Team may deliver the letter and explain the program to a family member or leave the letter at the residence.

D. When a recipient of the custom notification engages in criminal activity for which he or she is arrested, then the district commander will ensure:

1. notification to and coordination with the appropriate Bureau of Detectives Area to ensure appropriate charging occurs. The highest possible charges will be pursued for any individual in the VRS Custom Notification Program.

2. Court advocacy volunteers are notified of the date, time, and place of the bond hearing or other court hearings and encourage attendance at the hearing to demonstrate the community’s support in decreasing the violence.

3. coordination with the Cook County State's Attorney Community Prosecutions Unit as appropriate.
E. A copy of the custom notification will be forward to the CPIC and maintained within the district.

Should EBT Cards Be Banned at Casinos, Liquor Stores?

NY Governor Cuomo says yes, they should be. Sounds like a no-brainer at first glance, but let's really take a look at what is going on here. Is this really meant to save taxpayers money, or is it just another government scheme to snag more revenue?

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports:

Cuomo: Ban public-aid cards at casinos, liquor stores

ALBANY — Want to hit the blackjack table, a strip club or the local liquor store? You can, but taxpayers won’t be footing the bill under a proposal by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The proposal would ban Electronic Benefits Transfer cards, or EBT, from being used at the prohibited venues, with a punishment system both for welfare recipients and the establishments that allow them to be used. It would put the state in compliance with the federal Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012, which extended certain federally funded benefits but required the state to clamp down on fraud.

“These reforms will help ensure that public assistance is used as intended: to ensure the least fortunate among us are able to access food, shelter and heat while limiting potential abuse and conforming with upcoming federal standards,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said. The welfare program delivers cash and food-stamp benefits provided to recipients in debit-card-like form. The money, in some cases, can be accessed at ATMs.

The real question is though, how will it actually ensure that public assistance is used as intended? Or for that matter, how do we actually decide how the money is really intended to be spent? It all seems rather arbitrary.

The article continues:

Cuomo’s proposal calls for suspending benefits to recipients who use the card at unauthorized locations, ranging from one month for a first offense to six months for the fourth offense and each one after that. For a recipient with a family, only the guilty party would lose benefits; the other family members still would receive benefits.

Liquor stores, gambling venues and strip clubs would face a small fine for a first violation. From there, the punishment would vary, with casinos and liquor stores potentially losing their licenses after a second offense and strip club owners facing a misdemeanor charge after a third offense.

How exactly would they determine who used the card at an unauthorized location? If the entire family uses the same account, it seems impossible to determine exactly who should lose benefits. Besides, if it was actually a case of fraud, shouldn't they lose their benefits permanently? The proposal doesn't actually try to root out fraud though, it would only serve to restrict and punish the weakest and most vulnerable segment of our society based on arbitrary standards. If a person doesn't actually need the benefits, then they should not get them at all. But for the person who does actually need them, a month, or six months without assistance could be devastating.

The SNAP benefit, also known as food-stamps, can only be used to purchase non-prepared food items. They can't be used to buy household essentials like soap or light bulbs, they can't be used to purchase prepared foods at restaurants, and they certainly can't be used for gambling, liquor or lap-dances. That system is already in place, and has been since long before benefits were even paid electronically.

The EBT system does also provide access to cash benefits accounts as well though, for those who qualify. Normally this would be how a person would access funds for other necessities like those non-food household goods, a cab ride to a job interview or doctor appointment, or whatever one might normally need cash for. To assume that a person is committing fraud simply based on the location of the machine from which they made a withdrawal is downright discriminatory.

What if the beneficiary happens to work at a dance-club, casino, or liquor store and needs to withdraw some cash for a cab ride home from work? Does that mean they are committing fraud? The same goes for a person that simply might access an ATM machine in a business of that nature, simply because the machine is in a convenient location that doesn't require a separate cab fare just to withdraw the cash benefit when needed. It doesn't mean they are spending the money on anything they "shouldn't."

There again too though, we see the arbitrary nature of this proposal. What purchases are actually illegal, and constitute fraud? Under this proposal there will be no penalty for the drunk who stops off at the grocery store ATM and then uses that cash to buy his bottle of Crystal Palace at the liquor store. Meanwhile, the single mother working for minimum wage at the liquor store will wind up starving for a month or more because she used the ATM machine at work to get cash for cab-fare to get home.

The fact that someone can simply make a cash withdrawal from another "approved" location and then go spend the cash as they please, only highlights the futility of the measure. It might also be noted here, that half of all welfare recipients actually have jobs. So what is to stop them from using their own bank cards at casinos or liquor stores? The result of the governor's proposal will not be any reduction in fraud at all, but instead will wind up costing the taxpayers even more money. How you ask? Because the measure will require even more red tape and social workers to keep tabs on these reports. Someone will have to be sitting there reviewing the records of ATM machines, on the taxpayer's clock. Worse, the new restrictions could lead to all sorts of errors that would block innocent people from getting the benefits they need and deserve. Computer glitches, human error, even intentional badgering of low-income people.

Then we have the question of how exactly they intend to regulate exactly what businesses will or will not be approved for purchases or ATM machine locations. In New York State, we have both liquor stores, and beverage centers that specialize in selling discount beer. The beer stores also usually serve as a small local grocery, as well as a locations for check-cashing, Western Union, money-order purchases, and utility bill payment. Does NY State really intend to bar people from using a benefit card at any store that sells alcohol, or lottery tickets? That would even exclude regular supermarkets. Should a person be penalized with no money for food for a month, simply because they bought a bag of chips and a bottle of water at the smoke-shop next to the firehouse where they volunteer? Should a person be forced to starve for a month, because they paid their electric bill at a beer discount center?

Now we also have to look at the responsibility of the businesses themselves to enforce this. ATM machines are, after all, not manned by an actual worker, but usually serviced by an outside vendor. How would a strip-club owner, or casino operator manage exactly who did or did not use their cash machines? Would you submit to the demands of a store manager demanding to see your bank card and a photo ID before you made a withdrawal from an ATM machine?

The only way to really manage this effectively would be on an electronic level, in a way similar to how food-stamps are credited. If you purchase a basket of items at the supermarket, the SNAP benefit will automatically be applied for approved items, and there will be a balance that must be paid by another method for anything not approved such as toilet paper. So rather than imposing fines and suspensions of essential benefits to the needy, the machines would have to be programmed to either accept or decline a transaction, based on whatever location rules the state decides. Who will pay for that though? Again, the taxpayers will wind up footing the bill for that new infrastructure, in the same way they have with the SNAp food-stamp benefit.

Ah-ha! Now we finally come to the real reason behind all of this. It's not to stop welfare fraud at all, but rather to help the government itself actually defraud the taxpayers, for the ultimate benefit of elitist corporations such as JP Morgan/CHASE bank. This is a racket folks, predicated by the ignorant small-mindedness of people who will go along with anything that makes life more difficult for the poor. Don't fall for propaganda-driven schemes that are really nothing more than corporate welfare.

Ron Deutsch, executive director of New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness, said the regulations are unfair and demonize low-income residents.

“I think it is a distraction from the real problem, which is New York is facing record hunger right now,” Deutsch said. “I say what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If you want to prohibit people from using public money at establishments like this, then I think we should be prohibiting lawmakers from using their public money at the same establishments.”

It’s a counterintuitive idea to say the least, but it costs a lot to be poor in the United States. When money is at its tightest, cost-saving choices are often impossible to make, digging impoverished Americans deeper and deeper into the pit of day-by-day living.

A common narrative in today’s political arena is that the nation’s least fortunate only need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps – that they’re just not working hard enough. What often goes unnoticed, however, are the overwhelming barriers that those living below the poverty line face on a daily basis.

A car, for example, is a necessity for many jobs but the down payment can be insurmountably high. And even after the down payment poor drivers still face monthly payments, high gas prices, and the fact that low-income car buyers pay 2% more for a car loan than affluent people. Low-income drivers can also pay up to $400 more annually than wealthier drivers to insure their cars (for a car of the same model and with the same driver risk).

A lack of capital can also make it impossible to afford the security deposit on an apartment causing those in poverty to live day-to-day in expensive hotels. Chris Arnade, a friend of The Daily Ticker, has documented this phenomenon. Those in poverty who are able to rent or buy homes are also more likely to get household appliances through rent-to-own companies and end up paying more due to added interest.

Even saving money is a burden for the poor, as banks often charge large fees for those who don’t have a minimum amount of capital in their accounts—this makes cash checking establishments, who charge incredibly high interest rates on pay-day loans, the only choice for many.

Ben Hecht, CEO and president of Living Cities, an organization that works to revitalize impoverished areas, joined The Daily Ticker to discuss why it costs so much to be poor.

“Many of us are salaried employees and many poor people, if they’re working, are hourly employees,” explains Hecht.

If you’re an hourly employee who needs to apply for benefits or even see a doctor, you’re missing out on vital pay, Hecht points out.

Another challenge that low-income Americans face is a lack of services. “If you walk in many neighborhoods they’ll have one store—it may even be a corner store and not a grocery store,” Hecht says. The competition that neighborhood stores typically face doesn’t exist in poorer areas, allowing them to charge more for goods.

High quality food and produce is also often hard to come by. “You can’t find fresh broccoli…and if you think about it, it’s a logical, rational and economic choice for people to pick fast food in cheaper and larger quantities,” Hecht explains. This leads to obesity and other health issues that end up costing individuals more down the line.

“In many cities there are food deserts where you can’t even go to get the fresh food that we’re used to everyday," Hecht says.

One of the biggest disadvantages that those in poverty experience is a lack of broadband Internet. “One of the fundamentals about poverty is a lack of access to economic opportunity,” says Hecht. “And we all know that the number one factor in economic opportunity is education and we know that in today’s world much education, even in public schools, is done online.”

Furthermore, the Internet provides social networks where we can exchange vital information. Hecht gives this example: “I gave a speech years ago to 500 folks who helped people get jobs and I said to them -- how many of you got your job by a reference? All of them. How many of you got your doctor by reference? All of them. The power of those networks is being shut out in these neighborhoods and without the access to those types of technology.”

Detective Sgt Refuses To Resign After Conviction and Jail Sentence

Detective Sgt. Richard Sassi Jr., 34, was sentenced to six months in Dutchess County Jail for falsely reporting an incident to authorities, a misdemeanor, in August 2012. He was subsequently convicted by a jury after a 40-minute deliberation.

The charge stems from a call he made to 911 with report of a burglary in progress, when the boyfriend of a female criminal informant found the police detective in a closet wearing nothing but his underwear. A fight ensued and the disgraced detective is alleged to have pulled his gun on the woman's boyfriend. The former member of the Dutchess County Drug Task Force used a false name when he called to report a burglary in progress. At trial, he alleged that he did so in order to protect the identity of the informant.

The cop intends to appeal the conviction, and has refused to resign from the City of Beacon Police Department.

Back in 2006 the officer sued the city after they passed him over for promotion to detective, in favor of another candidate. It was alleged that he was denied the promotion as retaliation against his father, Richard Sassi Sr., who was the Chief of Police in the city at that time and an outspoken critic of city officials.

Although is seems rather commendable that the criminal cop was sentenced to any jail time at all, one can easily imagine that had he been a civilian in a similar situation, he would have likely faced numerous felony counts, especially considering the brandishing of a handgun during the incident. Furthermore, the detective faced no charges of any kind for his betrayal of public trust in having an illicit affair with an informant, or from using his authority to allegedly coerce sexual favors from that informant.

Single Motherhood (VIDEO)

I recently saw an article glorifying the virtues of being a single mother. As if the destruction of the family unit, and raising kids without a father was actually preferable to having some caveman lurking about the house. But this is the reality of single motherhood...

New Age or Old Nick?

The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey is really the book of self-worship, with manifestation in the physical realm brought about through ritual. The pseudo-religious metaphysics talked about in movements like The Secret or the so-called Teachings of Abraham, are also clearly self-oriented and purport that physical manifestation can be brought about by sheer will. Ritual magick is really nothing more than the orientation and focus of the will.

Either way, it seems like having the ability to manifest physical reality to one’s own liking would be desirable. However, I would draw the line at doing so to the detriment of others, lest that manifestation become what I would consider to be inherently evil. This is the point where I questioned these New Age teachings which I have been exposed to lately. There was an interview on Larry King that I watched recently, but was taped sometime last year I believe. This New Age material was the topic of discussion, and the question was asked about what one should do about friends and family who were not on the same “path” as those who were getting involved in this New Age metaphysical movement. The answer was to basically let them fall by the way-side. That the more a person manifested and attracted that which they desired, the people and things that were not in accordance with that would fall away as a matter of course.

Well, that seems to me to be a convenient way to abandon friends and family who might be having troubles and are not on the same “spiritual path.” You should feel no guilt in abandoning the people you love, because this is really their own doing and once they realize this they will begin “manifesting” for themselves.

Now this brings up another problem. According to these teachings, you can have whatever you want and are really only limited by your own belief as to whether or not you can have them. If you don’t have what you need or want, it is simply because you have not gotten on the right sort of “frequency” to manifest it. And they take it further than the Satanists. If there are things in your life that are not desirable, you are actually manifesting those things as well, apparently through flaws in your own thought process. Your own negative thoughts and doubts are attracting all the bad things in your life.

I’m starting to have a problem with this. If I get shot in the head it was my fault, I attracted it? Suddenly I am left feeling like this whole thing is really just another scheme to prey on the people who really need help the most, while conveniently blaming them for their own plight. Another plot by the Satanic elite to divide the people and absolve themselves of their responsibilities to the people?

First Time In History: Police Shoot Suspect Dead In Iceland

While American streets are awash in the blood of citizens shot by police. the Atlantic-island nation of Iceland has just witnessed it's first ever fatal police shooting.

On Monday morning Icelandic police responded to an apartment building where it was reported that a man was making threats to neighbors. It has been reported that the suspect fired from a window. An hour later, police stormed the apartment and shot the suspect. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. Two police officers suffered minor injuries in the operation.

This incident marks the first time in Iceland's 200-plus year history since their independence from Denmark, that police have ever shot and killed a suspect. Police extended their regrets and condolences to the man they killed.

For Americans, this record seems almost unbelievable. In 2012, police in the United States killed 587 people. That figure includes both justifiable homicide and non-justified. The average for justified shootings has hovered around 400 annually for a number of years. Police-involved shootings roughly doubles the number of people killed. Many of these shootings involve unarmed suspects.

While many may lay blame on America's "gun culture," that doesn't seem to hold true with the averages of other countries with high gun-ownership rates. Switzerland, for example, has an extremely low crime rate and one of the leading per-capita gun ownership rates in the world. Despite this incident being the first-ever police shooting in Iceland, gun ownership there rates 15th in the world with nearly one-in-three citizens owning a firearm.

In Germany, police only fired 85 rounds in all of 2011.

Figures like these stand in stark contrast to the numbers we see in the Unites States.  Of course, it should be understood here that we have high gun crime rates in general in the US, so not every police-shooting should be seen as unjustified. In some instances too, a suspect may not have a firearm but may, for example, use a motor vehicle as a deadly weapon. Police shootings are, sadly enough, often justified.

But that same time, we also see that many times police shootings in the US are not justified from a moral sense, but the officers are legally cleared of wrongdoing. In other instances, even wrongful shootings are met with little to no consequences, for what amounts to a criminal act by a law-enforcement officer. If there was more accountability for police, there may be less shootings and death, and a greater likelihood of proper discretion from professionals.

Here is a compilation of some of the less-than-justified police shootings in the US:

In this instance, a SWAT team were given medals for not shooting an innocent man who shot at them, when they illegally raided his home during the Christmas holiday season.

In this video (CAUTION: GRAPHIC) police execute a man during a raid in which they had full knowledge that their suspect no longer resided at the location. The man they executed was armed with a golf-club and seemingly unaware that the intruders were police.

Dead Bang: Man Shot Dead by Home Invaders With Badges

In this case, a man was shot dead by police after he knocked at a residential door looking for help.

Unarmed Man Shot Dead Running to Police for Help After Serious Car Wreck

We can even look to high profile cases, where incompetence borders on murder. Take the case of the alleged Boston Bombers. The first brother was reported killed in a shootout with police, but in other stories scrubbed from the internet, there was evidence that he may have been killed while in police custody. That may fall under the realm of "conspiracy theory" but we do have other facts to show that something was very wrong with the Boston incident.

The second suspect, was fired on repeatedly, without proper cause. He was not armed, and made no overt actions of violence while he was trapped in the boat. There was no immediate danger to officers/agents.  As if it weren't bad enough that police fired on an unarmed non-aggressive suspect, we must also consider the gravity of that situation. from a professional investigative point of view. In in the interest of public safety, that suspect had to be taken alive for interrogation to ensure that there was not a larger plot and more devices spread about Boston or the US. The agressiveness seems unprofessional at best.

Did Cops Try To Murder Bombing Suspect?

These instances, at face value, really are simply examples of incompetence more than deliberate murder. For civilians, some of these might amount to manslaughter, on par with accidentally killing someone in a drunk-driving accident perhaps. But whereas most civilians might expect to do 15 or years in prison for such an error, the police are held to a far less rigorous standard for screwing up, even after all their training and public confidence.

In this instance, a police officer was convicted of wrongdoing in the death of a motorist, but had his conciction tossed in order to become "top cop" in this town.

You put the uniform back on and you look at yourself in the mirror, and you think, I’m back,” he said. “It’s a good feeling.”

Cop Made Chief After Negligent Homicide Conviction

Now we can really scrape the bottom of the barrel though. Where genuine murderers use the badge to kill in cold blood, for pure self-gain. Given the extreme level of protections and forgiveness afforded law-enforcement officials, it seems more than likely that most cases such as these never make it to the light of day.

In the third segment of the following link, you can read the brief about two cops who murdered a mother who was nursing a newborn infant in order to cover up their influence over a masseuse-brothel.

3 More Stories of Police Incomeptence, Corruption, and Violent Crime

From small town, to big time, crooked cops do murder in the US.

Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa

Although we have gone out of our way here to emphasize the non-necessity of many police shootings, the incompetence, the mistakes, the regrets, the cold-blooded murders... We are not here to endorse the disarming of police. More often than not, police are indeed justified in using a gun to defend themselves and others. However, without accountability for wrongful acts, and downright criminal acts, the worst human beings among us will flock to the badge as a shield or protection for their evil ways.

Please support accountability for police.

Black Thanksgiving and The Madness of a Lost Society

I find it absolutely sickening that stores will open for Black Friday, on Thursday, Thanksgiving. With that in mind I present the following series of videos. You might also be interested in the following list of businesses who have now destroyed a cherished holiday in favor of the abomination of naked greed.

Boycott Shopping on Thanksgiving Day

"The underlying principles of modern consumerism, as designed by Edward Bernays (the father of modern propaganda) is to create demand where there is no real need. These people are victims of Bernays, and most of them cannot be reached, they cannot be helped... This micro-doc, is not for them."

A message from an anonymous supporter:

Here is a list of big box stores, mall stores, and outlets who have decided to open their doors on Thanksgiving day this year. It reveals who are the biggest offenders of corporate greed, lacking family values and being unAmerican. Some stores will open up at midnight and others even earlier at 9 or 10:00PM. Their employees wont miss out on too much even though it is still unnecessary and a slap in the face to their work force. Then there are the stores that will open around 6 or 8 which also sucks but those employees will still get to spend time with their families, watch the parade, see some football, and have a great dinner. The real problem are the retailers who are so obsessed with making a buck, the same buck they would still make over the following 3 days, that they require their entire staff to work that day. No request granted and just like Black Friday where no exceptions are allowed. KMart is the absolute worst open for a full 20 hours on Thanksgiving day followed closely by Gander Mountain open for 18 hours. Big Lots is the 3rd worst retailer open for 16 hours, followed by WalGreens 14, Dollar General 12, Shopko 11, and Michaels 10. Who the hell needs to buy a shotgun at Gander Mountain, Arts and Crafts at Michaels, or cheap crap Big Lots and Dollar General on Thanksgiving day? It is completely unnecessary and makes absolutely no sense. The negative effects of doing this will be unmeasurable and will surely backfire in the long run. People have clearly taken a stand and refuse to support retailers who care so very little about their own employees to support them. Take a stand and let’s reverse the trend. DO NOT SHOP ON THANKSGIVING!
