A former San Antonio police officer accused of raping a transsexual prostitute while on duty was ordered Tuesday to spend a year in jail.

A little over 2 weeks ago, John Wheeler III, former Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, a man whose Washington resume put him in contact with presidents, was found in the back of a garbage truck. Two weeks later, there is no police investigation, no cause of death, no questions from the press, just silence, deafening silence.
Nothing is said of Wheelers career, a high profile Vietnam veteran, a man much admired, even loved. Work, bio-chem warfare, nuclear programs, now totally blacked out. All that remains is a moment or two of video, very inexplicable, Wheeler, the consummate disciplined professional drifting in what seems to be an LSD induced haze. There, the curtain was drawn, the door was closed, no further cover story, no prepared lie, the “imagineers” responsible for such things caught off balance, this time at least.
John Wheeler was clearly, “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”
Wheeler was also a “contractor,” part of the army of private citizens that now control everything that the Department of Homeland Security does not. We call this “privatization.”
Federal District Court Judge Suzanne Conlon has dismissed (PDF) an ACLU challenge to the Illinois law that makes recording someone in a public space without their permission a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. As I've reported here, the law is used almost exclusively against people who attempt to record on-duty police officers. The ACLU was seeking declarative and injunctive relief to prevent the police from arresting workers and volunteers who planned to record police at an anti-war protest this spring.
Pastor Terry Jones was recently sent a security bill of $180,000 by the local authorities for his "burn the Koran" uproar. Pastor Jones is clearly another religious hack pushing hatred and division instead of love and peace, but he is still an American citizen with the right to protest and burn whatever book he wishes. His stunt was divisive and an obvious attempt to stir the pot, but for the police to charge a tax-paying citizen for securing an event that never happened is just, well, mind-boggling.
