Under the Taliban, the cultivation of the opium poppy was strictly forbidden. Today the crop is protected and growth is encouraged by U.S. and western powers. The opium poppy is the base for a number of drugs, most notably heroin, which is making a strong resurgence on the streets of America and in our schools.The majority of drugs stockpiled in Afghanistan are held in two provinces controlled by western forces, and NATO units profit directly by imposing a tax on the poppy crops.
