Seattle resident Jack Daniel McCullough, born John Tessier, is charged with the murder of Maria Ridulph, who disappeared from a street corner in small-town Sycamore, Illinois on December 3, 1957. Her skeletal remains were found about five months later, 100 miles away from where she had disappeared. Police did suspect the former neighbor Tessier for a time, but he initially provided an alibi. The case went cold after he joined the military and changed his name.
During the 1970's the man worked as a police officer. While some reports quote former co-workers as not being able to reconcile the man they worked with as being someone who could do such a thing, other reports indicate that he was actually fired from his job as a police officer and had a trail of molestation accusations against him.
