Boyfriend of slain Hyde Park teen claims he has been ruled out as a suspect

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that Mike Delarm, 19, stated in an exclusive interview with them that he voluntarily gave a DNA sample and allowed police to examine him for bruises and signs of struggle. Delarm was one of the last people to see Katie Filiberti alive before her body was found in a park off of Greentree Drive in Hyde Park, New York. It is also reported that his brother Tyler Delarm, 21, also gave a DNA sample to police voluntarily.

There was a recent fervor over rumors that arrests had been made in the case. Alarmingly, those rumors pointed to two local town police officers as the culprits. Later however, the rumors proved to be not entirely accurate. The two officers in question were not charged with any crime, but did submit to DNA testing, while one officer is said to have admitted to a relationship with the slain teen.

Previous coverage on that development can be found here:
CONFIRMED: 2 town officers submit DNA in case of slain teen

Police have refused to comment further or to even confirm if the report by Hudson Valley News was accurate after their exclusive interview with Hyde Park Police Chief Charles Broe. It is reported though, that the Chief told a Poughkeepsie Journal reporter, "The media coverage of this case has gotten so far off from where it should be."

Sadly though, the Chief has given neither the public nor media any clear, timely, or official information on the case at all. Therefore, it is the opinion of this author, that the Chief's comment has no standing. How can coverage be "off" if there is nothing to report? Or, if something has been reported inaccurately, why not set the record straight?

More details have also just emerged as to the initial report of the young woman's body being found. Subject to the state's Freedom of Information Law, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department police blotter reveals in a Noon entry on March 19 that a cellphone caller identified as Tyler Clark placed a call to 911 and that six deputies were dispatched to the scene. They Hyde Park Police Department has yet to reveal their blotter and other paperwork subject to the same Freedom of Information Law.

ALERT: Censorship! Bing! Bing! Bing!

Pojo turned off (never turned on) the comments section for this article?! Did anyone have success with one of the other major news sources?

The police will not confrim what MD e-mailed? Why not? The fact he voluntarily submitted DNA to the police is no secret, same for Tyler. SMH.

To Mike D., thank you for coming forward (again) and for that, you may be the only honest person in this investigation.

"Broe told a Journal reporter: "The media coverage of this case has gotten so far off from where it should be.'" <--Well, Broe... being no one reads minds, perhaps you could clarify (or just write) a press release on where the media coverage should be (blackout is never an option).

Fifteen weeks later and pojo is only just doing FOILS? WTH! Media does FOILs day-one so nothing vanishes. Media plays a huge role in keeping an investigation honest, and by silence (i.e., doing nothing and then shutting off the subscriber/public comments) media is complicit in corruption and cover-ups.

Not only do people have a right to know and a right to speak up , we, who continue to follow this case and speak of it, although we may not know them personally, we are supporters of the family as well. If I was a member of her family I would appreciate knowing that so many people continue to care and do not forget... so too with the innocent ones who are accused...

It is disconcerting that PoJo turned off comments for this article. I agree that the press has a responsibility to the public, to act as the public's eyes and ears to keep public officials honest. Sadly, in this day and age I don't think that corporate big-money news agencies are up to the task even at a local level. And frankly, I am not surprised that PoJo lacked the spine to leave a comments section turned on for this story.

I have said before, I and I will say it again to be clear here, I don't believe that the police have a responsibility to share all the details of the case. Certain facts are sensitive and critical to any investigation.

HOWEVER, the HPPD has shown a clear lack of integrity at this point, and frankly, I believe that there is an active coverup. There is no reason for the total disregard for the public, and no reason not to share SOME findings. I also believe that Chief Broe should have made an OFFICIAL press release through the department that two of his officers were asked to give DNA samples, and that one officer had a relationship with the departed. The HPPD should have also recused themselves from the investigation entirely at that point as well.

I do believe, and have believed since the first few weeks of the investigation, that a police officer is either the culprit, or covering for someone close to them. Last week's public-relations fiasco seriously undermined the credibility of the department and compounded my suspicion. I have less faith than ever that the case will actually be solved, much less successfully prosecuted.

And lastly, I wonder how much longer it will be before the Filiberti family breaks their silence. There will come a point when they too are no longer placated by the seemingly empty promises of the HPPD. I can't imagine what they must be going through at this point. The thing is though, for them, once they break their silence, once they state publicly that they too have lost faith in the investigation, that is a bell that cannot be un-rung. That would put them at odds with the police, when right now all they have left is the hope that the police will bring the killer of their beloved to justice.

It's unbelievable how the PD just clams up on the case at every turn. There is no way you can logically think it is anything other than a cover up.

Does anyone know why the parents are so quiet on the case??? I am just guessing that if any of the rumors are accurate, they don't want their daughter portrayed in a negative light. That makes it a lot easier for the PD to cover... if the parents cause a commotion, they can just release negative info on their daughter.

Really sad...

The Story That Never Was

http://www.thehudsonvalleynews.com/HVNews/HVNews_files/0706HN00A001.pdf

Seems this murder is really all about protecting the cops and not bringing the person or persons who murdered Kathryn to justice.

I live in a small hamlet of Hyde Park and it is gong on 4 months with no "real" information. All the rumors and BS floatimg around it mind boggling! As far as I am concerned, ther is a KILLER amongst us. If these law officers know somthing they should let the public know! Everything is so hush hush..WHY?

The only conclusion that I can come to that would explain the utter silence is coverup. Granted, certain facts need to be kept secret in any investigation, and police have to be careful not to cast blame in the wrong direction, but just the same, there are some details that we SHOULF have been told, and many empty assurances made.

For instance, we were told that we would get a statement from the medical examiner when the toxicology reports came back. But what did we get instead? Stonewalled, by order of Chief Broe and the Dutchess County's DA office. Which by the way, doesn't have the best track record with integrity and accuracy. A man was recently released from prison after 26 years for a murder he did not commit, and the office was once headed by Watergate break-in mastermind G. Gordon Liddy. Just a few examples htere. But I digress.

The point is, that we SHOULD have AT LEAST been given the manner of death (homicide, suicide, natural, accidental, unknown) even if they could not specify the cause. There is absolutely NO reason why not to tell that to the public, unless you are giving breathing room for a potential defense, and leaving the door open to alter the investigation.

Let's not forget too, that we got assurances that the public was safe, despite the fact that there was potentially a killer on the loose. At the time, I had taken that assurance to mean that they had a suspect and they were keeping a close eye on that person or persons until an arrest could be made. Now it appears they have no suspect, or that the suspect is one of their own whom they are actually covering for.

Time will tell of course, but at this point, this is how I am reading the terrain.

I guess we are on the same page! How can we, the locals, feel safe? Not one of the four law enforcement agency's "handling" this case have given the public any reason to feel safe! I do understand cetain information must be kept from the public during an investigation, but come on people! The longer this is drawn out the more people are going to give credence to these so called rumors! The case of the girl's body that was dumped and set on fire at Baird Park was solved in 11 days? I am convinced as you said earlier that it is someone in law enforcement or someone they are covering up for!

police agencies, in my experience, are the most corrupt and most powerful gangs in the world. If she was sleeping with a cop at 18, then it probably happened when she was younger, which means that cop was already getting away with breaking the law. they know who killed her, but they will never let it get to that point. this case is over. she should have stayed away from punks in gangs to start with.

LaNeedles,

Kind of harsh, but I have to agree. Just need to stay away from scumbags....
